Zufall Health Strategic Planning Process

Zufall Health is a federally qualified health center dedicated to expanding access to high-quality, affordable healthcare for individuals and families across New Jersey. Nonprofit Nav partnered with Zufall Health to facilitate a comprehensive strategic planning process designed to clarify organizational priorities, align leadership perspectives, and establish a practical roadmap for long-term growth and community impact.

The engagement combined structured stakeholder input, leadership dialogue, and strategic analysis to evaluate the internal and external factors shaping Zufall Health’s future. Particular emphasis was placed on navigating the evolving healthcare environment, including care delivery models, patient access, workforce considerations, digital infrastructure, and financial sustainability. The process focused on translating complex organizational challenges into clear strategic choices and actionable initiatives.

Through collaborative working sessions, Zufall Health’s leadership and board explored mission alignment, organizational strengths, operational realities, and emerging opportunities. The resulting strategic framework prioritized focus, adaptability, and disciplined decision-making, ensuring the plan serves as an active management tool rather than a static document.

Working alongside an organization deeply committed to community health and patient care, the strategic planning process supported Zufall Health in strengthening strategic clarity, reinforcing leadership alignment, and positioning the organization for continued effectiveness in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.

What is Zufall Health?

In 1990, with little seed money and a few volunteers, Dr. Robert Zufall and his wife, Kathryn, opened a small community clinic in Dover to provide medical care to low-income people and families. The retired urologist treated patients while his wife managed the clinic and doggedly pursued funding opportunities. Their tenacity for enlisting volunteers generated a core team of physicians, dentists, and support staff so they could provide a full spectrum of services.

Almost instantly, the once-a-week clinic attracted a growing patient base which, over the years, necessitated expansions of space and hours of operation. However, despite private and public support, funding for the clinic was a constant struggle. In 2004, its future was strengthened by its designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center. Renamed in 2006 to honor the Zufalls, the organization now proudly carries on their commitment in seven New Jersey counties.
