Position Description

Nonprofit Nav is a nonprofit consulting company that serves a variety of organizations from local grassroots movements to national and international foundations, associations, and charities. Our services include strategic planning, communications audits, feasibility studies, campaign planning, governance consulting, and more. Currently, our team includes two consultants in Michigan and one in Montana.

The Operations Assistant is responsible for administrative support activities related to client services and executive management. These activities include:

  • Report preparation and formatting
  • Proofreading
  • Scheduling and coordination-related correspondence
  • Research
  • Proposal preparation
  • Project management
  • Marketing activities

 

Position Specifications

This is a part-time, remote position based in Michigan. Domestic travel is required 2-3 times per year.

Approximate Weekly Hours: 20-25

Weekly Schedule: T-F, hours falling between 8:00AM and 4:00pm

Hourly Rate: $22.00

NOTE: Virtual assistant companies and similar multi-client operations will not be considered for this role.

 

Desired Education

A high school diploma is required.  Higher education is preferred, especially for those with business, nonprofit management, or English majors.

 

Desired Skillset

A successful candidate will be a self-starter who can understand and master technologies and new skills quickly. The ideal candidate will have some experience in the nonprofit sector and a desire to build a career in or serving cause-related organizations. Other required skills include:

  • Word processing, including typing, formatting, and designing documents
  • Ability to produce error-free documents and proofread for other team members
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and tracking progress
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • A proactive approach to completing tasks and working ahead of expectations

Technology Experience (the ideal candidate will have comfort using the following)

  • Microsoft Programs
  • Google Suite (Sheets, Doc, Slides)
  • Canva
  • Zoom
  • GMail
  • Slack
  • Miro Board (preferred, not required)
  • Survey Monkey (preferred, not required)

Katie Appold, MPA

Katie Appold is a nonprofit and association strategist with a track record of helping mission-driven organizations grow, govern well, and lead with intention. As founder and principal consultant of Nonprofit Nav, she partners with nonprofits, associations, and public entities across the country to strengthen boards, sharpen strategy, and build the organizational capacity needed to deliver lasting impact. Her career includes executive leadership roles across human services, foundations, and professional associations. In her first Executive Director role, she grew annual organizational revenue by 300% and secured the top national affordable housing grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. She later helped launch Do More Good, a nonprofit professional development platform that merged with Nonprofit Hub to become one of North America's largest free resources for nonprofit leaders. Katie's consulting work spans governance design, strategic planning, board development, capital campaigns, and organizational change. Her clients range from grassroots organizations to national trade associations and international foundations, and her vision has shaped projects touching human services infrastructure, healthcare innovation, housing access, educational programming, and trade association reinvention. Outside of her consulting practice, Katie serves as an adjunct professor of nonprofit leadership at Cornerstone University and contributes her expertise through board and committee service with regional and national organizations. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a Master's degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Leadership, and has earned a Certificate of Nonprofit Board Education from BoardSource and a Working Genius Facilitator Certification.
